Sustainable Business Practices
At Cameron-Cole we believe in taking a sustainable approach in our own business operations and encourage our staff to use our water and energy resources wisely. Within our offices, we have recycling areas where employees are encouraged to recycle office paper, aluminum cans, and paperboard.  We provide employees and guests with ceramic coffee mugs to reduce the need for disposable cups.  In offices with windows, most employees opt to work in natural sunlight and do not use overhead lights. Energy-saving light bulbs are available for staff that uses desktop lamps.  It is common practice in all our offices to not leave lights on in unused rooms and to turn off lights when leaving for an extended period.  Also, powering off “watt wasters,” electronic equipment on standby mode, at the end of the day is encouraged.  These efforts helped Cameron-Cole’s Alameda office become certified as a green business in the County of Alameda’s Green Business Program.  As part of certification, the office had to comply with all environmental regulations and took steps to conserve natural resources, prevent pollution, and reduce waste. To reduce the use of paper and other related resources, internal Cameron-Cole staff communications and products are sent electronically.  For our clients, many products are also submitted electronically, including our client newsletter, proposals, reports, and marketing materials. If the client desires hard copies, every effort is made to use recycled paper and print double-sided.

Locating our offices in areas where walking, biking, carpooling or mass transit for commuting are options is a criteria in our decision process, and our employees are taking advantage of this in many of our offices.  We also offer the option to work from a home office in certain situations.  In cities where mass transit is feasible, Cameron-Cole subsidizes employee use of mass transit programs.  For example in our Boulder office every employee has the ability to use Eco Pass, a business program to support the use of Boulder’s RTD service.  Cameron-Cole staff also participates in the City of Boulder’s GO Boulder program (see below for more details) and in the past two staff members have been recognized through this program for their dedication to commuting by bicycle.

Our mission is to continue to improve on our efforts and to look for even more ways to conserve resources in our operations.

Cameron-Cole Participated in 2008 Sustainable Opportunities Summit, February 27-29
For the second year Cameron-Cole assisted with the organization and running of the Sustainable Opportunities Summit held in Denver, Colorado, the end of  February.  The third annual Summit brought together 470 corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists from across Colorado and the nation to explore how companies can become more engaged in addressing climate change issues.  The Summit’s keynote speakers provided the current status of activity in clean-tech investment, sustainable investing, entrepreneurial business start-up areas, and corporate business activities being undertaken amid the growth in sustainable business practices and renewable energy.  Included among the keynote speakers were Governor Bill Ritter of Colorado and former Senator Gary Hart who focused on the need for government to act now to set policy to promote the rapid development of cleaner renewable energy sources.  Governor Ritter also discussed what the state of Colorado is doing as part of his Colorado Climate Action Plan.

As part of Cameron-Cole’s support of the Summit, Cameron-Cole staff arranged and moderated the “Sustainable Changes to the Supply Chain” session.  Connie Sasala, Senior Vice President of Strategic Services at Cameron-Cole, gave a presentation on how sustainability has changed the company-supplier relationship.  The panelists, who included executives from Wal-Mart and General Mills, provided details on how their companies are requesting more information from suppliers on their sustainable practices, and are greening their own procurement.  Ken Fossey, Regional Manager of Cameron-Cole’s Boulder office, introduced the Friday keynote speaker - Dr. Julie Gortie from Pax World Management Corporation- who spoke on new methods for measuring sustainable growth around the world.

Cameron-Cole will continue its participation with the Sustainable Opportunities Summit.  Mr. Fossey continues his role on the Summit planning team, which is already organizing next year’s Summit to be held at the end of February 2009 in Denver.
